The Tonga people believe that Nyami-Nyami is responsible for bringing water to their crops and fish for them to eat.

Nyami-Nyami (literally Meat-Meat) would show himself during dry season and allow meat to be cut from his body during times of need.

During construction of the Kariba Dam, thousands of Tonga people had to be relocated. The tribes people were not happy about this and the elders called upon great spirit for help.

In 1957, the zambezi received the worst floods in 100 years - so severe that the level raised suddenly by 30m destroying bridge and all access to the construction site. The spill gates were increased from four to six. The year after, in 1958, a platform collapsed and 17 workers died engulfed in cement. In total, 86 workers died during the construction of the Dam.

For the Tonga people, no doubt, that was a curse. Nyami-Nyami hit them hard.

Legend has it that the Nyami-Nyami was trapped above the Dam wall and his wife is now trapped below and his anger is causing havoc.
