The Freedom Ride - 15-26 Sept 2014

As part of a Community Social Responsibility project initiated by Zambezi FM, Bushtracks Africa, Thorntree Safaris, the three companies have embarked on a joint project called The Freedom Ride. The aim of the Freedom ride is to free society from unnecessary child deaths, maternal mortality, and GBV and child defilement.

The Freedom Ride attracts cyclists from all over Zambia and the world to cycle through communities to raise awareness and funds for the cause. Realising the need for the private sector to partner with government not only in commercial ventures, but in community service as well, the project aims to raise awareness about challenges in society, through sensitization projects.

This is being done through a cycle ride by bicycle over a distance of 1000 kilometres which symbolizes a kilometre a day for the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. Fifteen cyclists will embark on the 1,000 kilometre journey from Chililabombwe to Livingstone, a Border to Border Ride. The Freedom Ride will also celebrate Zambia's golden jubilee whilst recognizing the challenges that a new born child faces in its first 1,000 days.

The group, comprising Chief Executives, sports men, journalists and other stake holders will begin the 1,000 kilometre journey from Chililabombwe on 17th July 2014. The cyclists will ride for 9 days with stops along the route where road shows will be organized. Every hour and kilometre will be dedicated to a baby's one thousand days.

Through engagement of all print and electronic media both public and private, the ride will bring to light various issues related to the above social issues outlined.
